Tru Review: UP
Last night I did the solo thing and went to the movies to see Disney/Pixar’s “UP.” The CG film features Hollywood legend Ed Asner who provides the voice for the main character. The film has several other notable actors and actresses but the voice work is not what will keep you interested in the film. What will keep you attached to the screen is Disney/Pixar’s first time use (not abuse) of 3D and the gorgeous CG. I have been a fan of 3D for some time and it always amazes me how many of them use the technology to hype up horrible scripted films. You know the films where someone pokes an object out at the audience or a car comes barreling towards the screen; “UP” uses no such tactics. 3D in this film is used only to enhance the beautiful CG animation provided by Pixar. The landscapes and horizons are beautiful in this movie as well as the characters themselves.
Beyond the use of 3D, the story is very touching and will have the entire family laughing and at times crying. The characters are funny, interesting, and well thought out. Parents will probably have to have a conversation about life, death, and getting old. The movie does handle it very well but you never know what kids will walk away with from the film. There are a few fight scenes but all of them are lined with laughs so no worries there.
There are a lot of theaters that are showing the film in 3D and Normal version and that’s something to think about before going out to see it. Make sure that the theater that you plan to go to has the version you want to see. Honestly, it doesn’t matter which version you see because the movie stands on its’ own but it looks better in 3D. The only real difference is the price. The 3D version is slightly more expensive than the Normal version. (2 to 3 dollars more in some cases. You should check with your local theater.)
“UP” is truly a movie that is not to be missed.
