The story is hardly racist, but as I went through fan-adapting the story from French to English, I kept that in mind, changing one part where Papa Smurf says "the blacks are contagious" to "the black Smurfs are contagious".

This is such a small representation of what is really going on. I was just a little taken back that it was delivered in the form of a children's book. I still love the Smurfs...just not this particular story.

I thought it was interesting too. The iPad has a Smurf comic book app and it has a free download of "The Black Smurf." They also changed the color from Black to Purple.

How am I a "racist pig?" The information is documented. Maybe you need to do your own research. NBC knew the facts and that's why they changed the color of the black smurf to Purple. Get over yourself sir. They admitted to it. If you have an issue state it and move on.

"I especially like the “black smurf” story, and it never ever came to my mind that the black smurf could be a symbol of black people !!?"

Ah yes, just pretend there isn't a problem, and pow! There's no problem! And whatever you do, don't read anything critically.

Good thing there's no racism in France.

Now can you imagine to be a man that is born in Manaus-AM/Brazil, who is named as INDIO wherever he is, was and will be...?

All the kinds of preconceptions has only one reason: NO CULTURE.

People doesn't know the world's history, they dont want it, that is a thing they don't miss...

With their eyes closed to the real world. Where don't matter where you are from or what color your skin got.

I think... to be black, to be indio(or indian), gay or hell thing else... white even... poor, rich... you choose... Every single type of people is able to preconception...

So, let it go... and just fuck it all up...

[]'s

well, that's what i think...

It was never racist, the U.S. is just too sensitive. And rightly so, since everyone here is so fucking stupid. They ruin everything, even something as innocent as the friggin Smurfs. The only similarities is has is perhaps with a zombie theme. But not actual people.

Raciism exist if it has been passed down from generation to generation. I was raised not to see the color differences, but if you were , the probablility of u thinking it is racist is def. how you perceive it. I believe it was innocently done and not to offend anyone.

Hi all. As JM , I am french. I agreed with him at first. But I have to admit that we are what our environments makes us.

For instance, in our part of the world, having a svastika tatooed on the forehead is a sign of malevolence, while in India, it is more like a religious symbol. Our history gives meanings to symbols. Symbols are not universal.

Back to black smurf: To me, the meaning of the "black" symbol in this cartoon was more fear, unknown (night, darkness,...) and evil (black magic, black metal)

In a world that perceives more things through the color of skin, it is understandable that a black smurf, violent and unable to communicate, feels like despise against black people. Hence, lets turn it into purple as we probably dont want to hurt feelings unnecessarily and without purpose.

On another hand, i think it is sad that our world ingreasingly perceives things through skin color; it seems like a growing root of racism.

Well, I am french. As most of the french kid I read all the schtroumpf comic, as well as "tintin" and "asterix". I especially like the "black smurf" story, and it never ever came to my mind that the black smurf could be a symbol of black people !!? .. until I recently read a article in a french newspaper. That kind pf controversies sounds quite talibanistic to me.
