Tru Life: A Passing…

So today was an especially hard day for me. In the past 6 months I have experienced 3 loses. One a childhood friend whom I had known since I was born. The other a cousin who was beloved by the entire family. Today they buried a woman who I respected and admired for her success in radio and in life. She had what everybody wanted out of life, a good job, a good spouse, and deep rooted family connections which include a tight bond with her Mother. She was a great person who knew who she was and who she served…God.  She had fans and friends but most importantly she was a friend. I hadnt spoken to Sonya in quite a while but I was able to keep up with her through conversations with a prayer partner who is also my cousin. She was thriving in Atlanta on the radio. But more than that she was thriving in the community in which she served. The best example was when Sonya was broadcasting live from Atlanta on the Yolanda Adams Morning Show. She was at a church and she was helping to raise money to bury children who had recently died in a fire. The passion and the obvious concern for the family and their lose was apparent. I can’t remember how much they needed to raise but it didn’t matter; She planned to stay until it happened. Eventually an angel came along and decided that he would take care of the everything to give these children a proper home going. That angel was actor/director Tyler Perry. By the end of the broadcast the Sonya and the people of Atlanta helped raise over the needed funds. That is just an example of what she did for others and the commitment she had for the community. I say this to say that Sonya was the type of person I strive to be. Someone who cared for others and loved doing it. She will be missed.d

I will truly miss Sonya Hamm. I first met her while driving my Aunt to work. We have always listened to 103.9fm. I remember wanting so eagerly to sing the birthday song…And Sonya gave me that oppotunity! She said that I woke even her up that morning! The while singing with the Durham Community Choir I had my opportunity to meet her face to face! It was a blessing. I ran into her more and more when I worked at Golden Corral and while going to Christian faith Center Church. Everytime she called me her lil brother in Christ. Well…I’m fully grown and will miss her very much. My Aunt moved to Atlanta and was pleased that Sonya moved down there the same time. But when I broke the news of her passing – even my Aunt grew solemn. We all have make leave when God calls us home. But won’t it be good to meet the same Angels on earth that we’ll see in Heaven. Well our Angel has gone home – and we see her again!! May God continue to bless her family, Friends and our memories of that Angel!
