Tru Talks: Robin Givens Needs a Life!!!

Posted on 03/20/09, in Tru Talks, by Truitt O'Neal

Well it looks like  “domestic violence” is the new catch phrase of the day as the country continues to deal with the alleged attack on Rihanna by boyfriend Chris Brown. Most if not all talk show host’s are hitting the airwaves to tackle the issue. Point and case with actress Robin Givens. You may remember Givens from the 80’s sitcom “Head of the Class” and her recent extended engagement on the CW sitcom “The Game” where she is once again reprising her roll as a super star actress “married” to a sports figure. A stretch, not really. Anyway since the announcement about the “alleged” beating, folks have been crawling out of their dark holes to give their opinion on “domestic violence” including Givens.

It’s hard to believe but is has been over 20 years since Givens went on TV with then husband Mike Tyson to talk with Barbara Walters about the still “alleged’ abuse. 20 years later, Givens is seizing the opportunity to commemorate the anniversary by going on talk shows like Larry King and more recently Oprah to speak on the issue. My problem is this. Instead of the taking the opportunity to speak on healing and how women who have endured abuse do survive, she used Oprah’s nationally syndicated talk show to throw men under the bus and say that we don’t get worked up enough over “domestic violence.” Really Robin? Are you serious? How can you say what’s in a man’s heart or on his mind? There are millions of men who are not tolerant of “domestic violence” and speak out against it everyday.

Still, at this point, we don’t know what really happened in that car that night. The only people that really know what happen are Chris and Rihanna and their not talking about. The one issue you should have is with Rihanna for not speaking up. If this is such a powerful issue for you, maybe you need to use what celebrity you have left and reach out to her as an “alleged” victim of “domestic abuse” and let her know the importance of sharing a story like hers. It’s a bit of a disservice when people don’t use their celebrity when it really matters. There are hundreds of reported instances of “domestic abuse” against women every year but you decide to speak out on another celebrities situation now, the 20th anniversary of your our “alleged” abuse. Are you kidding? Go back to wherever you have been for the last 2 decades.

Instead you have gone on TV and attacked folks and mentioned people like Diddy and Usher and didn’t explain why you mentioned their names. Are you trying to infer that Diddy and Usher are abusers? Or are you saying that they turn a blind eye to abuse? Which one is it? What I would suggest to you Robin is to just sit tight and wait until all of the details are aired out instead your current attack on the male population. We’ll still be here when it’s all over. I’ll leave the light on for you.

Well Tru, it looks like Robin made it onto your blog in addition to all the other places you mentioned, despite your best intentions. I liked your idea about using one’s platform to education instead of capitalize on someone else’s misfortune. Toward that end, it would be great to know what the fellas are talking about with respect to domestic violence. I would love to be a fly on the wall when men are pulling each others’ coat tails about inappropriate physical behavior with their women, or just trading comments about the issue.

As misguided as Robin’s statements may have been, women are very curious about what men think and are saying about issues that affect us disproportionately. While we are at it, I would love to know what men think about men giving women HIV through heterosexual sex, while the women think they are in monogamous relationship. While it appears that I digress, I think this can be framed as a type of “domestic violence”.

So, being Tru to who you are (pun intended), give the ladies an inside view of “what’s going on” with the fellas!
