| November 4, 2008 marks the beginning of a new era in politics across our country and across the globe. For the first time in the history of the United States of America, we the people have our first African-American president. It was record turnouts at the polls during that helped make this momentous event possible.Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was declared the winner of the national electoral college at around 11 p.m. on November 4, 2008. Obama swept to victory with 333 electoral votes – 270 were needed to win – and 52 percent of the popular vote.
