Tru Talks Blogcast: Joe (the singer) and Election 08′

Posted on 09/25/08, in BlogCast, Tru Talks, by Truitt O'Neal

This morning I was concerned about a conversation between syndicated morning show host Tom Joyner and R&B singer Joe. During this morning’s broadcast, Tom Joyner asked Joe if he was registered to vote. The question seemed to stem from text messages that were being sent to the show. It was all down hill for Joe at that point. He seemed to be more concerned with rockin’ tracks from his brand new CD. Listen to the clip and comment below:

Tru that was crazy!! I’m like dude you’re how old and you asked “Can you vote online?” You ought to be shamed!! And I bet you he’s not going to make the effort. I didnt hear the urgency in his voice. Saaad!

I heard it this morning. I can’t believe that he’s not a registered voter.

That is just sad man. Are there people like that who are that out of touch? Wow.

I hope someone will prove me wrong but I bet if someone checked to see if he actually did register, you’ll find he DIDN’T. How sad when artists expect the buying public to support them but they can’t support the due process.

JK Alston comments from the email:
As bullish as I am about Obama getting elected, it’s nobody’s business if the dude votes or who he votes for (forces me to apologize for a previous stance on Sheryl Underwood). He’s obviously not very informed, as we can hear from this recording, and part of the problem in this country is that a bunch of airheads and halfwits are voting. Nobody’s ever mistaken me for being someone of even mild intelligence, but I still keep up enough to make the decision that’s right for me. Let the man promote his album, he’s gotta eat too.

It makes you wonder who else is a “Joe” out there who doesn’t know anything about the voting process, not to mention the importance. This was very enlightening and sad, to say the least. We still have a long road ahead of us.

It’s very sad when public figures sound so ignorant on the issues that really matter. This is why we need to not only register people to vote but educate them about their rights as a voter.

Disturbing. This guy is clueless! He is not engaged in the political process at all, and at his age that is ridiculous. I guess when the economic implosion we are facing results in the collapse of his label, he will get involved in the process.

Greetings:

I too heard the conversation between “Joe and Toms Joyner this morning”..however it does not shock-me-at-all. “Joe”..is the type of guy who has been around in the black community since inception.

In fact ..imagine this. The slaves were standing around on the plantation…and some of them were taking about …sneaking away when the sun goes down. Well…the ones who did not know that they could even ….SLIP AWAY….were related to ..”JOE”…

Black people are wakeing up….but it is still a SLOW PROCESS.

I think some of the comments earlier have been harsh. At least he had a good attitude and was willing to go and register. While it is sad that he is a public figure and was not informed it is good to know that he was receptive to the idea of voting.

This is the reality, and there are thousands of more Joes that are not registered and have the same mindset. What I celebrate today is that he was open for change, and now that he’s registered rest assured that this will surely be in his conversations today. Way to go Tom & Congrats Joe

This is sad, but Joe isn’t the only one he’s just the famous one of the moment. People we gotta get out and vote, this is bigger than Obama, let’s not forget our ancestors DIED so we can have the right to vote

Joe was here to promote his album. Not talk politics. If he’s not into politics, he’s not into politics. Truth is, there’s still gonna be DRAMA in the world and United States, be it Obama or McCain. Do they know that Joe has a new CD coming out? WOW! Dont knock the brother for doing what he do, and not doing what you do. For the record, yes I’m a registered voter and I’m voting for Obama, but I’m not trying to push my beliefs on Joe. Grow up people!

Okay. The brother has never voted but i sounds like a lot of other black people out there. He actually didn’t believe his 1 vote made a difference. I do like what he said to Tom and the crew though. It just took someone to come at him in a serious tone to get him to register. I think this is good for all of us. Thre are a lot of informed people out there that need us to go to them peronally on a serious level and talk to them about the seriousness of this matter. Not for the sake of any one candidate but for the sake of keeping our freedoms. Sometimes our vote is the only voice we have. If we don’t use it then we can’t complain about not being heard or about any policies our government lays in front of us. Get the word out!!! Register today!

In response to the comments made where the person was saying, “Joe was here to promote his album. Not talk politics… Dont knock the brother for doing what he do, and not doing what you do.” I agree he was not there to talk politics, nevertheless, it is sad that a man who has travelled the world doesn’t know what is going on in his back yard. Every man/woman of color should be into politics to some point! Our ancestors died for Obama to be where he is today and for us to have the right to vote. Joe should at the very least know his rights! I could go on and on @ this but, I will just say-Vote!!!

I am speechless. It is really sad to know how man people do not understand basic concepts of their citizenship. There are so many people wasting the hard fought gains of the people who have come before them. Not just with regards to voting, but education and employment.
We waste so much of what people literally gave their lives for. People who died never seeing freedom, but believing in it and knowing that they
deserved it even if they never felt it. And we gleefully waste it.

Robin.. Joe said he was gonna register to vote and he was excited to vote. “People of Color” need to stop beating each other down and hating on each other, wanting to cut their nuts off, not buy their albums, and “G.. Dam America.” Obama is not pro-black. Obama is for America as a whole. “People of color” were the main ones hurting Obama’s campaign. We look for every little thing to hate on the next. The brother said he would register and vote. How many of your neighbors, co-workers, and friends are you trying to get registered? We are the ones that really count. Do millionaires really care about gas prices, who’s losing their house, war in Iraq? Listen to Tom Joyner tomorrow morning and check out how many “People of Color” names they drag through the mud and call it jokes.
